THE SUNSHINE FARM: Entrepreneurial Artisan Cheese & Dairy Opportunity

Description:
The Sunshine Farm has pasture land, a small barn, a small Alpine goat herd, and facilities that could be easily modified to create a certified milking parlor, milk processing room, and cheese making facility. We are looking for a person or couple interested in leveraging these resources to start an artisan cheese business. Customers in both our road-side market and our boutique winery demonstrate a strong interest in artisan cheese products.

Details

  • The Sunshine Farm sits on the shores of Lake Chelan in north central Washington State. There are currently 14 wineries in the valley and a strong interest in quality, artisan food products.
  • For three years, we have been milking goats and making cheese for on-farm consumption by our staff.
  • Your first year on the farm would be a ‘trial period’ to see if there is a mutually satisfying long-term fit. On-farm housing and other farm work (tree-fruit, vegetable, retail) could be available during this period.
  • A dairy could be established using our goats or using a variety/herd of your choice.
  • A herd of up to 20 milkers could be developed using existing structures. Larger facilities could be built within 3-5 years to accommodate larger milk/cheese production.

Who we are looking for

  • A person or couple interested in settling down and committing to their own farm business.
  • Three years intern experience with goats and cheese production (herd knowledge, milking experience, cheese making experience)
  • A strong entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrated commitment to the agrarian lifestyle.
  • Willingness to live and work in a resort valley with a semi-rural environment and residential and commercial development.
  • Practical business skills imperative (operations management, marketing, finance, record keeping, etc. )
  • Practical building skills helpful (basic carpentry, electrical, etc;)

Benefits

  • Option of living as a part of a close, farm-based community where we eat great food together daily.
  • The power to make decisions that will grow a business that is truly original and interesting.
  • The ability to work in a hopeful environment surrounded by other locally-focused farmers and farmland preservation efforts.
