OVERVIEW
Interns will be trained in all areas of starting and running a small, diversified vegetable farm. I am interested in finding interns who are serious about wanting to be farmers and are ready to work hard to learn how to do it. For this reason, I prefer interns who have at least one season’s experience, but I will take interns with no experience if they demonstrate the right motivation and work ethic.

EDUCATION
I take the educational aspect of the internship seriously. We will devote one afternoon a week to intern education. Each week we will tackle a new topic, through discussion, readings, and hands-on demonstrations. Interns will also have the opportunity to manage different aspects of the farm through a series of “rotations”. Rotations will include: greenhouse management, direct seeding and transplanting, irrigation, weed and pest control, post-harvest management, marketing, and tractor work. For four weeks, each intern will shadow me in one of these rotation areas, and then take on as much responsibility as possible for that month.
SCHEDULE:
Interns will work six days a week doing field work: Monday through Saturday from 6:30 to 1:00 with a half-hour break for breakfast. Wednesday afternoons (2:00 to 5:00) will be devoted to intern education. At least four additional hours a week will be devoted to interns’ special projects and rotations. This brings the work week to 40 hours a week, plus 3 hours of education.
COMPENSATION, MEALS, AND COMMUNITY:
Interns will receive a monthly stipend to cover housing, food, and other expenses. Compensation will start at $500/month for interns with no experience and $700/month for interns with experience. The stipend will be raised $50 a month. Interns will have to pay for their housing out of their stipend: your options include a tent site ($50), a small cabin ($150), or a room in the farmhouse ($175-$225/month). Interns will have access to a shared kitchen, bathhouse, laundry, and wireless internet.
Lunches are eaten in common on the farm, with all farm residents taking turns cooking. Breakfasts and dinners will be on your own. It is best if interns have their own transportation, but it is possible to get by without. Town is four miles a away and there is bus service.
I would prefer to have interns arrive at the beginning of March and leave at the end of October, but shorter stays will be considered.
SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES
Because of the unique nature of the Sunshine Farm, we have opportunities for interns to work in other areas besides vegetable production. We are also looking for individuals who might want to stay on at The Sunshine Farm for another year or more after their internship ends.
Opportunities include
- Taking on more responsibility on the vegetable farm. In particular, we are looking for a Marketing and Sales Manager, but I would also consider taking on Assistant Managers with other inclinations and talents.
- Managing the cut flower garden in 2009. We would like to train an intern toward this end in 2008, and hand over management to that person in 2009.
- Learning about goat dairying and cheese-making. Please see our ad for a goat herdsman/cheesemaker.
- Orcharding
- Marketing. Please see our ad for Sunshine Farm Market Manager.
- Livestock farming
