THE SUNSHINE FARM Job Title: Orchard Lead, Light Mechanic, & Organic Manager

Reports to: Sunshine Orchard Manager

Overall Responsibility
Lead the Sunshine Farm orchard crew in year-round agricultural operations including pruning, thinning, and harvesting. Develop, implement, and manage organic growing practices for portions of orchard. Maintain Sunshine Farm equipment and troubleshoot/repair basic problems. Maintain a clean ranch operating environment.  Maintain and repair on farm housing.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Hire and manage orchard crew and set a high example of productivity and dedication in the fields by working along side seasonal employees.
  • Develop and implement organic plans for lower tree-fruit blocks and manage transition into organic compliance.
  • Skillfully operate tractors, mowers, sprayers, and other equipment during orchard operations.
  • Perform regular maintenance and small repairs on diesel tractors, trucks, two-cycle engine tools, and other equipment; maintain a clean shop and orderly ranch area.
  • Coordinate and organize fruit harvests and sales with Sunshine Farm Market Manager; assist Tunnel Hill Winemaker in seasonal winemaking operations.
  • Record crew hours and provide bi-weekly totals to Sunshine Farm Bookkeeper.

Term of employment
Part-time in winter season (could be full time depending on skills)
Full-time plus in growing season

Qualifications

  • Passion for growing tree-fruit crops and developing local economies
  • Minimum three years experience in organic tree-fruit production
  • Strong entrepreneurial sense and good organizational skills
  • Proven light mechanic skills on diesel and gas equipment
  • Willingness to work in both organic and conventional growing environments; willingness to work 40+ hours/week during growing season
  • Proficient with Word and Excel.
  • Basic Spanish-speaking abilities. 
  • Able to lift 25 lbs

Compensation
$12-$14/hour DOE
Profit sharing bonus based on net profit (calculated after deducting labor and growing/ranch expenses)
